Vision

To establish a Futuristic Institution for Higher Education and Research in Agriculture and Allied Sciences integrating Ecology, Food, Nutrition and Health.

Mission

--> The overall mission of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences is to provide knowledge and support for teaching, capacity-building and conducting research on the principles and practices for climate-smart, sustainable agriculture to produce healthy food under water-limiting conditions.
--> Design appropriate agricultural courses which will meet the aspirations and needs of young students, agricultural professionals and Aspirational Farming Community.
--> Build on agroecological principles to support the adaptation of agriculture and allied activities for coping with the hazards of climate change.
--> Focus on innovative methods and practices in agricultural / horticultural crops which will reduce the need for water but at same time improve yields.
--> Bridge the gap between agriculture and other sciences through , hybridized, integrated approaches.
--> Concentrate on value chain for agroecological market produce; reversing the dis-interest in farming as a profession; strengthen community-based extension.

ACTIVITIES
  1. Establish a model agricultural campus in Acharapakkam with an integrated “Eco-Agriculture-Food Systems” farm for hands-on training of students, farmers and interested visitors.
  2. Establish New Departments of Agroecology / Crop Health / Natural Resource Management for Research and Higher Education.
  3. Introduce hybrid diploma courses for the first time In India (Study the nexus between food, nutrition and protective health measures; horticultural therapy for healthy life; herbal farming and technology).
  4. Introduce innovative diploma courses (commercial nursery and seed production by physically-challenged persons; urban agriculture, soil health care; water- saving agriculture'; natural nutrient sources for agriculture.
  5. Introduce Energy Crops, Biofuels in curriculum and research.
  6. Establish a Horticultural Therapy Centre at Acharapakkam.
  7. Establish a Organic Botanical Garden and conducting annual shows on eco-agriculture and food systems and their impact on human nutrition and health.
  8. Introduce Summer Schools on Agroecology for school students.
  9. Introduce half a day workshops for creating awareness on Agroecology for Corporate Executives.
  10. Organize international /national symposia, workshops, e.g. System of Rice Intensification; eco-agri-food systems for sustainable food production and nutrition for health; horticultural therapy for healthy life.
  11. Create "New Extensionists" for community based extension with knowledge on agricultural markets.
  12. Provide opportunity for general public to understand Agroecosystem.

ACHIVIMENTS
Dr. B. Gopu, Assistant Professor in Horticulture, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences received “Kanwar Virender Singh Memorial Award in Fruit Science” for the year 2018, from the Society for Advancement of Human and Nature (SADHANA), Solan, Himachal Pradesh, in appreciation of his contribution in the field of fruit science and his research activity towards increasing yield and quality of mango through crop regulation techniques under high density planting. The Award comprises of a cash prize of Rs.1000 and a Plaque.
